How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?

Your bed should be your sanctuary, but it’s hard to relax if your bedding is dirty. That poses the question, how often should you wash your bedding? It depends on the type of bedding. Let’s look at how often you need to visit Lava Laundry in Woodland, CA, to clean your bedding.

Sheets and Pillowcases

If you took a microscope and inspected your sheets and pillowcases, do you know what you would find?

First, you would find some dead skin cells, and lots of them. Humans shed up to 40,000 skin cells a day. Considering that you spend around a third of the day in bed, that’s where many of them end up. Dust mites feed on skin cells, so you would also come across some of those little critters.

In case dust mites and skin cells aren’t bad enough, you also have to worry about sweat, oils, and even fecal matter. All that bacteria can end up on your skin when you sleep, leading to everything from acne to eczema. Plus, it’s just gross.

So, how often should you clean your sheets and pillowcases to protect your health and sanity?

Experts recommend that you wash your sheets at least one time a week. You can use Lava Laundry’s coin-operated laundromat or drop your pillowcases and sheets off at our Woodland, CA, location and we will wash them for you.

Comforters

You love snuggling under your comforter after a long, hard day. However, your comforter can also contain the skin cells, oils, dust mites, and other yucky items that are on your pillowcases and sheets. If you don’t use a duvet cover, wash your comforter every week. If you do, wash the cover every week and the comforter every six months.

Keep in mind that your home’s washing machine probably wasn’t built to handle a comforter. Use our Woodland County, CA, laundromat to wash large items, like comforters.

Mattress Pads

Your mattress cover is safe, right? After all, it’s hidden snuggly under your sheets. However, it still needs to be washed at least once every two months. If your pets sleep in the bed, you’ll need to wash it more frequently than that. Even though your mattress pad is under the sheets, it still captures some body oils and dust. Over time, a white mattress pad will turn yellow if it’s not laundered. Just like a comforter, mattress pads are big and bulky, so don’t try to wash yours in your washing machine, or you could have to call a serviceperson.
